Opportunities
1. Sponsor an athlete: all Special Olympics sports training sessions
and competitions are free to athletes. While many businesses provide
in-kind donations, it does take a certain amount of money to cover
uniforms, equipment, training venues, transportation, and the like. On
average, the cost of sponsoring one athlete is $250 per year.
2. Help support the annual
Bowl-a-thon on November 2, 2003-two sessions, noon and 2 p.m.
- Donations of prizes
help encourage participation.
- Corporate teams can
collect sponsors and bowl with the athletes.
- Corporations can
pledge support for Special Olympics bowlers-a set amount or per pin.
3. Donate directly to Special
Olympics Centre County. Your contribution will help the all-volunteer
staff provide training in sports from aquatics to volleyball.
4. Hold a fund-raiser for SOCC.
Last year, one company held a "soup day" once a week with donations
going to SOCC. Other companies have held casual Fridays, allowing
employees to dress down for a contribution.
5. Request a presentation by a
Global Messenger. These Special Olympics athletes carry our message to
civic groups, fraternal organizations, and corporations. They can tell
of opportunities for volunteering at training sessions or competitions.
6. Encourage participation on the
SOCC management team. We're always looking for coaches, public
relations professionals, fund-raising experts, Web support, and others.
7. Underwrite a sport or sponsor a
tournament. Regional tournaments introduce athletes to teams from other
counties and broaden their experience.
8. Donate in-kind goods or
services. Become one of the generous businesses in Centre County that
provide food for a tournament, items for a silent auction, free
advertising, transportation to a competition., or other needed
services.
